Mafalda de'Sa (Mafie Fernandes) - Worcester Park, Surrey. Valley Road 1963-1966: & Msongari 1967-1968
I played hockey for both Loretos for the first teams and left Kenya in Dec'68 to emigrate to England with my family. I married Steve Desa (from Kisumu) in London in 1973 and we have a 28 year old son who married this August, here in London. The nuns I fondly remember are sadly no longer, Mother Dolorosa, who made Maths enjoyable, Mother Philip, who taught me Latin & English Literature, Mother Carmel, Art & Hockey at Valley Road. Then at Msongari I do remember Hikey very well as she was our Hockey coach & Mother Germaine was my Mother Superior. I loved my years at both Loretos and sadly have never been back to Kenya... maybe it's best to have ones memories intact. I am now an Examinations Administrator at Merton College, after spending many years in the Banking field & though I never played hockey again after leaving Kenya, as the clubs here were not that easy to get into in the early 70's, I then continued with Badminton to league level and am still playing the sport at our community club. My fellow Goans at Valley Road in 1963 were Beryl D'Souza, Lorraine Saldanha, Colleen Dantas & Dolores Nazareth. Beryl, Lorraine & myself are in London while Colleen & Dolores are in Canada. mde-sa@merton.ac.uk (28-11-03).

Julie Gallors (Fetheringham) – Tokyo. Msongari.

Sarah SethSmith (Fielden) – Nairobi. Msongari 1964?

Marta Fiorotto - Houston, Texas, USA. Msongari 1970.
I was at Msongari from 1967 to 1972 (O' levels in 1970) Although I was married, for professional reasons, I never changed my name.
I have been living in Houston, TX (USA) for the past 20 years after spending 8 years in the UK where I did my B.Sc. (Biochemistry, Manchester, 1976). and Ph.D. (Applied Biology, Cambridge, 1980). I then came to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston for a postdoctoral fellowship (Pediatric Nutrition and Gastroenterology), and never left. I am now on the faculty in the Department of Pediatrics. Given my youthful ambitions, I did not have children until late. I now have 2, David (10), and Hannah (4). The older sister (Silvia) of my Msongari classmate Paola Hanna (Fornari) moved to Houston 5 years ago, and we see each other very frequently. It's amazing how these early childhood experiences tie us together ! martaf@bcm.tmc.edu (25-8-00).

Nina Gumoes (Firth) - Epsom, Surrey. Mombasa 1976-78, Valley Road 1979.
I attended Loreto at Likoni, Mombasa from about 1976 to Dec 1978, when we moved to England via Nairobi. I think I went to Valley Road for a month or two in 1979 and we came to the UK in March 1979. I did my 'o' levels in 1986 to give you an idea of age.
I went back to visit (Likoni) this Christmas. We had tea with the nuns, and they were glad to show us around. It's just the same. For anyone who remembers, the old black climbing frame is still there and it's just as popular!! (I got huge blisters on my hands when I played on it). My son is nearly seven, and has decided to remain in Kenya to attend the Banda School. It's just as well my aunt still lives in Nairobi...

Quellie Bullingham (Fittall) – Carlton, Beds. Msongari & Lumbwa 1946.
I was born in Nairobi in 1930 the seventh child of Robert and Zina Fittall and was at Loreto from 1936 until 1946. My parents went to Kenya before the first world war - my father from England in 1912 and my mother in 1914. They married in Nairobi in 1915. My father was for many years (until his death from Typhoid Fever in 1943) the Manager of the East African Standard (newspaper and shop). My sisters Diana and Cecily also went to Loreto.

I married Oliver Bullingham in Nairobi in 1957 and have three sons, David, Alan and Robin. We all went to South Africa in 1963. Sadly I lost my husband in 1982 and am now living in England. My sons are scattered all over the world. David in Toronto, Alan in Sydney and Robin in Pretoria. I now have four grandchildren.

My best memories of Loreto are the war years spent at Lumbwa. When the war started in September 1939 and the Msongari school buildings were requisitioned by the army, my parents decided to keep me at home as things were so uncertain. I stayed at home for the rest of 1939 and the whole of 1940. My education consisted of standing by my mother's bed in the mornings while she enjoyed her tray of tea and reciting verses to her from the Omar Khayyam! The rest of the day I had free to ride my bicycle and pursue my own interests. Fortunately I was already 9 years old and loved reading and as my father had access to all the news books at the EA Standard bookshop, I read widely for the year and a half that I was out of school and so continued my education by default! When I rejoined Loreto in Lumbwa in January 1941 I was able to go back into the class I had left in 1939 and was well able to keep up.

What wonderful years those were on a farm high up in the hills of Kenya without the normal restrictions of school life in a city. We roamed the hills in our spare time and made the most of our freedom. Our dormitory was a converted stable, aptly renamed "Bethlehem". However, school work continued to the same standard as before which was a minor miracle in the circumstances. The nuns lived among us and we had excellent communication with them. They did a splendid job in my opinion and all of us who were there really benefited from those special years. One of the great benefits of our isolation for nine months of each year was the lasting friendships we forged with our classmates, which have stood the test of time. Several of us who left Loreto 54 years ago are still in close friendly contact. quellie@compuserve.com (29-2-00)

My dad was a doctor in Tanzania from 1951 to 1985, with brief breaks in London and Edinburgh with the whole family for postgrads. They arrived when my brother Enrico (Saints) and my sister Silvia (LOG) were tiny. I was born in 1954 on Ukerewe Island (Lake Victoria - went back in 1998 - what an idyllic place, despite the fact that there's still no water or electricity). I was at Msongari as a boarder from 1961 to A levels in 1972 (brief break in Edinburgh in 63/4). Went to Edinburgh (studied languages) in 1973. Met Willie Hanna, a Belfast man, there, in Jan 74. We both finished at Edinburgh in 77, and then did postgrads (mine in translating in Bath). Married in Dar in 1978. Lived in Dublin (where he worked in the department of Foreign Affairs + me as a freelance translator-interpreter) from 78 to 81. Luisa was born there in 1980. Moved to Brussels in 1981. David was born in 1982 and Emilia in 1985. Willie joined the European Commission's Development Aid section in 83, and in 87 we went to....wait for it...Barbados for 4 years. Almost as idyllic as Ukerewe. Then off to Cameroon in 91. Less idyllic. I picked up various teaching jobs in both places In 1994 we came back to Brussels. Here I got into language teacher training, management training, and various other related activities - on a freelance basis. Luisa has completed her 2nd year at Durham University, David is doing A levels in June and taking a gap year to decide what to do next, and Emilia....is coming with us on our next posting this summer.....back home to Dar! (We moved to Dar on 23rd August 2000 and I'd love to get in touch with anyone who's here - our daughter Emilia (15) goes to the International School here. )

"I was at Msongari as a boarder from 1963 - 1969 (while my brother Gary was at Saints) and in those days lived in Dar es Salaam (such happy memories).Left after O's, did a secretarial course in the UK (Tunbridge Wells) as I fancied a change of scenery and thoroughly enjoyed my year there. However at the end of the year couldn't wait to get back to Nairobi where my parents were now living (couldn't take the cold!). Met my husband Barry (who was at Saints during my time at Msongari and his sisters Vicky, Stephanie & Nicola were at Msongari too) after my return and we ended up in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe after we married in 1975. Reason for this his mother, who is Rhodesian, wanted to return to Bulawayo and his father got a transfer with his company.Barry was having hassles getting work permits as an articled clerk for an accounting company so decided to move with his parents. He returned for our wedding six months later where we got married in the convent chapel and have been here ever since. We have been very happy here as the lifestyle is very similar to Kenya/Tanzania. Have two daughters, Elaine 21 and Michelle 18. Elaine is in London working as a nanny after doing a two year nursery nursing course in Banbury and Michelle has just done her A Levels and is going to the UK this year hopefully to do veterinary nursing at Middlesex U. Barry is a partner with Ernst & Young while I work mornings only for a finance house (18 years) owned by the Barclays group. Have a house at Binga (on L Kariba) where we have many enjoyable breaks with great fishing.
As an aside, named our golden labrador dogs over the years as Kenny (Kenya), Kili (Kilimanjaro) and Red Setter Tamu (Watamu)." barbrice@mweb.co.zw (11-12-00)

I was actually at Valley Road Convent for a term in 1944 before going on to Pembroke House from where I was the first ever pupil to go to Downside, quickly followed by Hamilton-Gordon. Diana was, of course, at Msongari and we were married in St Austin's Church through the coffee from Msongari in those days) in 1963.
